Boat Shows: How to Use Them When You're Shopping
A boat show puts hundreds of boats, engines and accessories under one roof, which makes it one of the most efficient ways to shop. Discover Boating, the NMMA's consumer program, says winter shows are a smart time to compare models, get quotes and plan a spring delivery before the boating season gets busy. This guide covers the 2026 Discover Boating show calendar, what each show is known for, how to prepare, show etiquette, and how to turn a day at a show into a good buying decision.

What each show is known for
Discover Boating's descriptions:
- Boston calls itself the largest indoor boat show in the US. It covers cruisers, downeast-style boats, center consoles, bowriders, pontoons, tow boats, jet boats/PWC and inflatables, with saltwater fishing seminars and a kids' zone.
- Atlanta shows more than 400 boats and is easy to cover in one day.
- New York is the first and longest-running boat show in the US, dating to 1905, with boats up to 52 feet.
- Minneapolis shows more than 500 boats and is the largest show in the upper Midwest. It focuses on freshwater families and anglers, and all major outboard brands are there.
- Chicago bills itself as Chicagoland's biggest boat sale. Dealers there offer winter pricing and spring service reservations.
- Louisville combines boats, RVs and outdoor gear on one ticket.
- Charlotte leaves plenty of time for detailed ownership questions.
- Miami calls itself the largest boat and yacht show in the world, with everything from kayaks to superyachts, on-water displays and sea trials.
- Atlantic City focuses on sportfishing boats, center consoles and cruisers, with fishing demos and seminars.
Discover Boating says admission is free at these shows for children 12 and under.
Before you go
- Do your homework. Discover Boating suggests researching the brands and boat types you're interested in first. Our choosing a boat type guide and model pages can help you narrow it down.
- Know your numbers. Set your budget and monthly payment target first in Shop by Payment. Show pricing moves fast, and it helps to know your limit before you sit down with a dealer.
- Check the seminar schedule. Discover Boating notes that shows include seminars on boating safety, fishing skills and boat repair.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk a lot and take your shoes off and on to board boats.
Show etiquette
Discover Boating's do's and don'ts:
- Ask before you board. You're usually encouraged to look around, but ask first. Some boats have a limit on how many visitors can be aboard at once.
- Take off your shoes before boarding, to keep the boat clean for other shoppers.
- Don't use the boat's restroom. Use the venue's.
- Don't eat or drink on the boats.
- Leave pets at home unless they're service dogs.
- Bring the kids. Shows have family attractions.
- Ask questions. Staff are on site to help.
Getting the most from a show
- Compare side by side. You can sit in competing boats within minutes of each other. Look at layout, storage, seating and helm visibility the way you'd actually use the boat.
- Ask about the full cost, not just the show price. Ask what engine is included, whether a trailer is included, freight and prep charges, registration, and delivery timing. Then check them in the True Cost tool.
- Ask about delivery. Discover Boating says dealers offer quotes, show-only packages and spring delivery scheduling.
- Get the quote in writing, with every line item, so you can compare dealers after the show.
- Ask about a sea trial. Miami offers sea trials on site. At indoor shows, ask the dealer to schedule one before you commit. See our sea trial checklist.
- Don't rush. A show discount isn't worth buying the wrong boat. Our how to buy a new boat guide walks through the rest of the process.
