Bay boats and center consoles look alike: an open deck with the helm in a console in the middle, so you can fish from every side. The difference is the hull and where it's meant to go. A bay boat has a shallow draft and a low profile for protected coastal water such as bays and estuaries. A center console is usually built with a deeper hull for nearshore and, in bigger sizes, offshore water. This guide compares them using the models in our data.
How our data labels them
We file a boat as a bay boat when the builder's own pages call it one. Center consoles are split by length: Center console (under 30 ft) and Offshore center console (30 ft+). Builders label their own lines, so some "hybrid" or "bay/coastal" models could fit either. Check the builder's description of the hull.
Choose a bay boat if
- You'll fish inshore: bays, flats edges, marshes and estuaries, where being able to run and float in skinny water matters.
- You want a boat that's easy to trailer and launch and can work shallow water.
- Calm and protected water is your main playground. Our data has 128 bay boat models from 37 brands.
Choose a center console if
- You'll run nearshore or offshore, where a deeper hull and more freeboard help in waves.
- You want more fuel range and room for bigger outboards.
- You'd like a do-everything boat for fishing, cruising and family days on open water. Our data has 223 center consoles under 30 ft from 64 brands and 109 offshore models of 30 ft and up from 36 brands.

Figures checked 2026-11-05, computed from the model pages on this site (each value links to the builder's own page there). "n" is how many models publish that figure. Prices are the builders' published base or starting prices, not dealer or out-the-door prices, and many builders don't publish one, so treat the price rows as a rough picture of what's listed, not market prices. Medians are the middle value, so half the models are above and half below.
The draft row tells the story: the median published draft is 14 in for bay boats and 19.7 in for center consoles under 30 ft. Center consoles also carry more fuel (median 100 gal against 70 gal). Builders measure draft in different ways (some with the engine down, some without), so compare models on their own pages.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Where exactly will we fish, and how shallow does it get at low tide?
- How often will we cross open water to get there, and how rough does it get?
- How much range do we need? Check fuel capacity against your longest run.
- What's the weight on the trailer, and is the ramp shallow? See Launching and Retrieving.
